Folks, I'm signing off the forum after a few years of CX 7 ownership. In one of my early posts I compared the new '08 CX-7 to what was our new '08 Ford Edge. I wrote at the time that the Mazda had a better overall fit and finish but that I thought that, mechanically at least, it was the weaker of the two vehicles.

Indeed, that turned out to be the case. Primarily in the engine/turbo area. If any of you have spent any time under the hood it's readily apparent by the various stamping on the 2.3L engine that it's a Ford product. I can't help but think that it was used as a testing ground for Ford's new Eco-Boost turbo system that you see utilized in many of their vehicle base which includes the Taurus and the F 150. This may have given Ford the chance to work out the turbo issues that cropped up in the CX-7 over the years. From what I've seen Ford has been very successful of late in the Turbo dept which shined in their recent Baja trucks.

All of that aside, though, when we received notification that the warranty had been extended to 70,000 miles we decided to get rid of the car as the warranty came to an end. Yes, the turbocharger had been replaced but the timing chain was beginning to rattle, the odd vibration under acceleration continued to flummox me, and a recent leak in the transfer case sealed the deal.

I've driven single cars over my 45 years of driving up to 384,000 each (and have driven well over a million miles in total) and it was very clear that the Mazda wasn't going to get near the 384K figure so it was time to part with it. Mazda took pretty good care of the major things over the years (although it was like pulling teeth when it came time to convince them that the car was blowing smoke through the turbocharger) and I performed all of the other service myself. In short I can say that it was a 'pretty good' car - not great by any means - but a 'pretty good' car.

On Saturday we traded the car for a new 2012 Subaru Outback wagon that is loaded with all of the bells and whistles. The car handles well, is quiet, and doesn't vibrate. Obviously, it's not as fast as the Mazda but it's cheaper to drive. On a good day with the Mazda we got 19MPG. Around town with the Subaru we just hit over 29MPG and on the highway we achieved nearly 32MPG. Not too bad for a car of that size and utility.

So, in closing, I've enjoyed the interaction on the forum over the years. (Thanks, guys, for the takeover of the forum that occurred a while back - you saved it!) To the rest of you, enjoy your CX-7's and keep on plugging along!

I finally got out of my SLOW Mazda3 iTouring and into what I really wanted.. a Mazda6 s! The V6 has good grunt and we all already know the Aisin six speed transmission is silky smooth and reliable. Only crappy thing about it is the horrible stock tires, which I have already swapped out for Conti ExtremeContact DWS tires. Also.. never EVER buy a Mazda from Courtesy Imports in Henderson, or one from Centennial Mazda in Northwest Las Vegas!

I went to Galpin Mazda in Van Nuys, CA and got a great deal. Those other two dealers in Las Vegas are total bullshit. Browning Mazda in Cerritos, CA also gets a thumbs up from me even though I didn't buy from them, they offered me a great deal.

Love this thing! PICS: Almost fully loaded, sans the useless Navi system.

I don't know which car I love more, my CX-7 or the 6.

I have the OEM black plastic rear bumper scuff guard that is off of my cx7. It is used and will need new 3m double sided tape to work. It is a little faded, but that is about it. I took it off when I had my rear bumper repainted and installed a brand new one.

If you live close you can have it for 10 dollars.. I live in North NJ. If you want me to ship it... Honeslty it is not really worth it, but it will be 30 dollars shipped

Pics upon request. It is just the OEM rear bumper guard in plastic. You will have to scrape off the old tape and put new tape on it.

If you are local this will be a deal for you. It is sitting in my room and I will be throwing it out soon!

Ok, so my other car is an 06 Acura TSX I have had since new, and now I can't live without HID's. My son talked me into getting a "retro" kit on the CX 7 and we installed it this weekend. Didn't come with the adapter, so I modified (on the passenger side) the H7 bracket, and it worked perfectly. Problem, is on the drivers side and the stinking metal retaining spring/clip. I busted the plastic around it, so I had to silicone the crap out of it to hold the HID lamp in. Believe it or not it is holding well, and there is no bounce at all. But when I have to replace it, it is going to suck.

Beyond that, I have the dreaded "dark spot" and it is driving me nuts. I searched and it seems that this is a common problem with using HID retro kits in a halogen projector. Some people say to rotate the bulb or use a spacer but most say to upgrade to an actual HID projector. Since I broke the drivers side, I figure I may as well do it right and replace it with the OEM HID headlight assembly. So now that you have read all this, on to my main questions.

1:Should I just send the headlamps to a professional and have them fit HID projectors in the halogen assembly's? (I am NOT going to try this myself)

2: I replace drivers and passengers side halogen headlight assembly's with OEM HID headlight assembly's, knowing that the "kit" I have now wouldn't work. How much of a PITA would that be? I know I would need both OEM lamps and ballasts, but what else?

3: learn to live with it. Cheapest option, but not something I want to do.

I've been getting a P2128 Engine code for the past month. It throws the car into lame duck mode. I know it has to do with the gas pedal - high signal input. It almost left stranded a couple times. The past two times I had to remove the gas pedal and take it apart before the CEL would clear. Has anyone had this issue before? Is there a fix before I spend some money on a new gas pedal. Car has a lot of mods and 52K miles. TIA

So I went in to my local dealer with no intentions to crunch numbers or test drive the CX5. I just went there to pick up an oil filter and to check out the showroom CX5 they have.

Well an hour later and a test drive later, I was debating slightly on trading in my 7 for the brand new CX5 AWD GT.

HOWEVER!!!!!!!

Initial inspection - the car is sexy and has all the wonderful technology that the Mazdas are know for. The stance was amazing and the cabin space/cargo room comparable to the CX7, interior is fancy and does not feel too cheap. I did not like that the armrest was pushed back a little so it made my arm feel awkward when trying to rest it on both the armrest and shifter. (elbow/hand.) I assume with some adjustments from the seat it can feel better.

Test drive - I was not able to test out the handling as much in corners, ect, but I was able to give it a little gas and see what it had.

IT LACKS PERFORMANCE!!!!!!!! HOLY Cow it has no pep compared to the 7 - (obv with almost 100 less HP) but the engine screams at you if you try to do anything with it. ( MPG>HP) That is why it gets good gas mileage though. The gas pedal seemed a little stiff compared to the 7. Braking was all there.... it stopped when I wanted it to stop basically.

If it was not for the performance aspect. That car would be mine. Price range was about what I am paying for my 7 now. But I am not going to lose the performance just for 20 dollars cheaper every week in gas.

Bottom line - if you dont like speed and would rather have higher MPG - get the cx5. I like speed thus why ZOOM ZOOM!
